During the 14th edition of Cinéma du Québec in Paris, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) will organize the 7th RENCONTRES DE COPRODUCTION FRANCOPHONE with the support of the Centre du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel de la Communauté française de Belgique and Wallonie Bruxelles Images, the Centre national du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC), the Luxemburg Film Fund, the Office Fédéral de la Culture Suisse and SwissFilms, the Studio L’Equipe, Téléfilm Canada, TV5 Monde, and with the particpation of EAVE.

Thanks to this collaboration, 3 days of workshops and meetings for French language co-productions will take place in Paris on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of November 2010.

The RENCONTRES DE COPRODUCTION FRANCOPHONE aim at developing co-productions and partnerships between producers, sales agents and distributors from Québec, Canada, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Switzerland, and other European and Mediterranean countries, around French-language feature films in development and in post-production.

On Friday 20th of August, ACE held a seminar on “ACCESSIBLE EUROPEAN SOFT MONEY FOR JAPANESE PRODUCERS” in Tokyo, presented by Ronan Girre.

From January 26 to February 6 (2011), the 40th anniversary edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam will take place. During the festival, the 28th edition of the international co-production market CINEMART will be held from Sunday January 30 to Wednesday February 2.

Over the course of four days, CineMart will again present around 30 to 35 international projects of acclaimed directors and their younger talented colleagues to approximately 850 professionals from the international film industry, ranging from sales-agents, producers and distributors to television buyers and funding agencies.

For the second year, ACE will hold its Japanese Coproduction Lab in collaboration with Unijapan, from Friday 7th January to Tuesday 11th January 2011 included, in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan, thanks to the support of MEDIA International. This year, this event will be in collaboration with TELEFILM Canada.

This 4-day Workshop will gather around 25 European, Japanese and Canadian professionals to develop the opportunities for artistic and financial cooperation between these three zones.

It will consist of case studies, marketplace presentations, pitching sessions, 1-to-1 meetings and networking events.

“THE REAL DEAL : WHAT’S YOUR STORY? AND WHY? ”

From the 6th to the 11th of July 2010, the Galway Film Fleadh brought together many industry professionals coming from different horizons. On this occasion, ACE and the Irish Film Board co-organised the seminar “The Real Deal” for the 5th year in a row.

The core topic was the film in terms of the contents and the relationship between the authors, directors and their audience. Are they calculating, impulsive, innovating or imitative? As a professional, which film for which audience? Aiming at what: entertaining or informing?

These questions enthused more than 100 Irish and international professionals.

This week, French theatres will welcome the fascinating film BLACK HEAVEN by Gilles Marchand, produced by the ACE producers Jacques-Henri Bronckart (Versus Production, BE), Carole Scotta and Caroline Benjo (Haut et Court, FR). The film and the team were presented at Paris Cinema and the film was selected  in Cannes Festival this year!

“TAX INCENTIVE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION”

Over the past years, numerous European countries have developed mechanisms to incite producers to come and shoot or post-produce their films in their respective territories. Generally, tax credits or other measures that aim to reimburse the producer for a part of the funds spent in the country are put in place. Which ones are the most beneficial to the producer? Is it necessary to have a local co-producer? Must the film pass a national culture test (point system)?
Over a period of two hours, a panel of speakers originating from several different European countries will hold an interactive debate with the public, aiming to constitute an assessment of this new European Eldorado.

Speakers: Karla Stojakova (Axman Productions, CZ), Raimond Goebel (Pandora Filmproduktion, DE), Cristiano Bortone (Orisa Produzioni, IT).

THE CINEMART DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROJECTS IS SEPTEMBER 1st, 2010

If you have any new projects in development that need additional financing, and for which you think CineMart would be an appropriate platform, send your projects to Cinemart before SEPTEMBER 1, 2010!

At CineMart 2010, Simon Pummell’s “Brand New-U” and at CineMart 2009 Lance Weiler’s project “HIM” were successfully presented in the official selection of CineMart. These trans media projects generated a lot of interest from the professionals that attended CineMart. That is why CineMart would like to continue this movement in 2011 and invite producers to apply with a cross/trans media project.

The 2010 edition will bring more than 100 producers, financiers and new forms of investment together over a two-day period at the Hilton London Tower Bridge in the City of London. This year’s event has cross industry support from senior European producers and financiers, The BFI London Film Festival, UK Trade & Investment, the UK Film Council, and the EU’s MEDIA Programme.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm, Friday 9 July 2010.

After 16 editions, the FICV is one of the biggest film festivals in Latin America. This event will be the professional extension of the festival and will be an occasion for European producers, distributors, broadcasters and financing organisms to strengthen their relationship with the film industry in this geographical zone.

AIM will take place over 4 days and consist of:

- CO-PRODUCTION MEETINGS: 12 Latin-American projects in the process of being financed  will be presented.

- A WORK IN PROGRESS proposing 6 Latin-American films either in post-production or looking for a co-producer, European distributor or international sales agent.

The first ACE CO-PRODUCTION LAB IN HONG-KONG will take place in March 2011, a collaboration with SINAPSES ASIA Ltd and HAF.
This 4-day lab during Filmart, will consist of case studies about coproduction between EU and Chinese companies, screenings, plenary sessions on distribution of foreign films in the EU and in the Chinese territories, pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings between the participants and the experts, market presentations and a meeting with a panel of Chinese talent agents.

The participants will be 10 Chinese producers from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore; and 6 EU producers, the 16 of them holding a project .
4 European experts will be invited, mainly producers having coproduced a Chinese Film, sharing their experience with the participants. 4 Chinese experts plus a panel of talent agents will join them to help the participants to understand the ins and outs of film business in the Chinese market.

This year ACE held its traditional ACE PRODUCERS’ ANNUAL REUNION in Zürich (Switzerland), in co-production with FOCAL and with the support of the OFC (Office Fédéral de la Culture) and of the ZÜRCHER FILMSTIFTUNG.

This event brought together the  ACE 19 producers and, for the second year in a row, the non-EU new members of ACE, the eight ACE IPA 2 producers. Together with 40 other ACE producers they attended screenings, case studies and a Swiss Focus & Co-Production Forum with 30 Swiss professionals. This focus on Switzerland allowed ACE producers to make fruitful contacts with their Swiss peers and to discover their talents and all the assets of the Swiss cinematographic industry.

ACE also wishes to thank the MEDIA DESK SUISSE, and the ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL.

In 2010,  ACE held its first CO-PRODUCTION LAB  IN JAPAN, a collaboration with Unijapan. The second edition of this lab will take place in January 2011. If you want to make an application please contact Sabrina Camus (sabrina@ace-producers.com).

This year, this exclusive event, a 4-day workshop, gathered 20 European and Japanese experienced professionals to develop the opportunities for artistic and financial cooperation between these two zones, thanks to the support of MEDIA INTERNATIONAL and UNIJAPAN.

The workshop consisted in co-production case studies, marketplace presentations, pitching sessions, 1-to-1 meetings, networking events, and visits of the Toei Movies Studios and the Schochiku Kyoto Studios.  The EU and Japanese participants found there a unique opportunity to connect and improve their knowledge of both the industries.

In 2009, ACE opened its doors to non-EU independent producers by launching a new training session (ACE IPA), specially designed for them, thanks to the support of MEDIA International Preparatory Action.

This call for proposals has been published at an earlier date with a different deadline in North America, Canada and New Zealand. However, in order to preserve equality between all countries, the final selection of participants will take place will take place in January 2010.

You are a European Producer and you want to develop a feature film (fiction, animation or documentary) initiated in Europe (minimum length: 75 minutes).
Your project has to respect the following criteria:

•    the project can be in development, in shooting or in post-production
•    25% of the budget are already secured
•    you are looking for European co-producers
•    you are looking for pre-sales, sales agent, or other financing sources in Europe (Tax Credit, Tax Shelter, European Regional Funds)
•    An already confirmed support (in development or in production) from a European regional fund is a plus.

After its selection at the International Critic’s Week in Cannes 2009, “ORDINARY PEOPLE” by Vladimir Perisic, produced by Anthony Doncque, Gilles Sacuto and the ACE producer Miléna Poylo (TS Productions, FR) received 3  awards at the Sarajevo International Film Festival: the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Feature Film, the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actor (Relja Popovic), and the FIPRESCI Prize!

NOTHING PERSONAL by Urszula Antoniak, co-produced by Macdara Kelleher (Fastnet Films, IE) was awarded the Leopard for Best Actress, the Leopard for the Best First Feature, the 1st Prize of the Youth Jury, the FIPRESCI Prize, the CICAE Prize and received a Special Mention of the Eucumenical Jury!

AKADIMIA PLATONOS by Filippos Tsitos, co-produced by Thanassis Karathanos (Twenty Twenty Vision, DE) was awarded the Leopard for Best Actor, the 3rd Prize of the Youth Jury and the Prize of the Eucumenical Jury!

And last but not least GIULIAS VERSCHWINDEN by Christoph Schaub, produced by Marcel Hoehn (T&C Film, CH) received the Prix du Public UBS!

Three case studies, in the presence of the co-producers of the films, will put the strengths and weaknesses of co-production with Switzerland into perspective, as much from the viewpoint of the rules followed in each co-producing country as of the connections between such national rules and the European mechanisms of co-productions.
The case studies will also serve to illustrate the circulation of Swiss co-productions in Europe.

Canadian and International feature film producers are invited to apply to participate in the IFF. Registration is free but competitive, with final selection to participate based on company track record and the suitability of projects.
